What is circuit training?
Circuit training involves performing a number of exercises in a sequence. These exercises are set up in 'stations' where an exercise is performed for a specific number of repetitions or for a set time period before moving on to the next station.
Â
A circuit is generally 6-15 stations long and is scheduled to take between 5-20 minutes with 15-30 seconds rest between each individual station.
Â
What are the benefits of circuit training?
Â
Circuit training is a method of training used for developing a number of fitness components particularly strength, aerobic power and mobility. Circuit training is great to increase overall fitness and strength levels while also providing a break from normal training. This keeps training fun and interesting.
Â
A well designed circuit will increase overall body fitness and tone as a good circuit should not exercise the same body part.
A suggested circuit could be as follows:
Total body (skipping)
Upper body (push-ups)
Lower body(squats)
Core and trunk(sit-ups)
Total body(burpees).
Â
The type of exercises chosen, the technique used to perform them and the individual’s capacity will determine the degree of improvement.
Â
Circuit training requires minimal amounts of equipment, is easy to administer and is a versatile form of training that helps to remain interested in training sessions.
